Welcome to Mechanic Shortcuts.
I've been doing auto mechanics for a long time. As with everything,
there are tips and shortcuts. Things that you can only learn or pick up
with years of experience, service, or simply by completing a task over
and over. Have you ever picked up an auto repair manual and thumbed
through to any section and read the removal instructions? It usually
goes something like this- Remove the battery or disconnect the battery,
jack up the vehicle, support it with Jack Stands. Before you
disconnect the battery make sure that you write down the stereo code
located on the rear of the stereo, see section 4.1 for removal process.
And that's just for changing the brakes. By the way, when you do go to
the stereo removal section, it tells you before you remove the stereo
be sure to disconnect the battery. That is what I call useless
information. What it does not tell you is, what tools are you going to
need? What other parts are going to need or want to replace while
you're already doing the job that you're doing.
I know repair manuals have their place and are needed. But I have always wanted a place I can go, that doesn't act as of everyone coming to the site is completely incapable of turning a wrench. Or even worse they act as if everyone coming to the site has 50 plus years of experience and has done that particular job numerous times.
It just never made sense to me. If they knew what all the parts were and all the steps involved they probably would not be at the site in first place. So this is my attempt at making a site I would want to bookmark. I have realized is it very time consuming. For it to be feasible it must generate revenue. That means you will see ads. However here at Mechanic Shortcuts, I will always name the job. List the tools needed. Always do a quick run through on how to do the job, for those who know what they're doing. But maybe have never done that particular job or maybe never done that type of car. Maybe want to see if there's anything special that needs to be done.
****I didn't forget you guys without experience****
After wards, I do give you a very thorough and detailed instruction on how to do the same job. Put simply, as long as you have a very basic understanding and know the names of the tools then I want you to be able to read this site and feel confident enough to complete the job yourself. I also invite you, ALL OF YOU, to submit your mechanic shortcuts. All those little known things you have picked up while wrenching on your ride.
Like using a bar of soap for quieting a squealing belt. Or black pepper to stop a radiator leak. Or using a leather belt to get a stuck oil filter off. Or adding 3-4 ounces of transmission fluid to the crank case in order to quiet noisy lifters. You get the point.
I
hope this site helps you, and if it does, feel free to tell everyone
you now about it if it does not help you. Then congratulations you
are a MASTER MECHANIC. Good job.
